With Gennady Golovkin vs Martin Murray becoming official this past weekend, we are left wondering if there are any other more worthy bouts to make….

WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is fresh off his impressive starching of Marco Antonio Rubio, but has met some bumps in the road in the time since. Originally hoping to set up a fight with Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez, GGG was met with closed doors. With Alvarez and Cotto unwilling to face him at this point, a fight with #1 WBC competitor Martin Murray was made a reality.

The English middleweight Murray has certainly held his own in recent outings, but it could be argued that he has never faced anyone at Golovkin’s level. Undoubtedly his biggest test was an April 2013 bout against Sergio Martinez, in a bout that Murray would lose by decision. So why is this fight even happening if there is such an apparent gap in skill level?

Well, firstly I’d say that Murray might disagree with that assessment, and secondly there really wasn’t many other fights apart from Cotto or Alvarez that made any sense at all. Talking with, “Good Boy” Golovkin says he is satisfied with the pairing in Monaco:

“Murray is a strong guy and he had a good win,” Golovkin said to “Domenico Spada is an ugly opponent to fight. He has a style that is not the easiest to fight against but (Murray) did his job and won the fight. I think this fight with Murray is a good fight for us.”

“We couldn’t get (Julio Cesar) Chavez Jr., Miguel Cotto or Canelo (Alvarez) to fight us next,” Golovkin said. “We have to wait until after the (likely) Cotto-Canelo fight is done, so Murray is the best available opponent for me.”

In a world where your name is everything outside the ring, ‘mismatches’ are usually commonplace. Will this be as much of a landslide as it looks on paper? Stranger things have happened, but I suspect this will be another quick finish for the Kazakh knockout artist.

Stay tuned for more news about Gennady Golovkin vs Martin Murray as they prepare to duke it out for the WBA, WBC interim and IBO middleweight titles in Monaco this coming February.
