Oakland Raiders Name Derek Carr Week 1 Starter

With just a few short days remaining before the 2014 NFL regular season kicks off, the Oakland Raiders have finally named their starting quarterback. After a strong preseason, rookie quarterback Derek Carr has edged out veteran Matt Schaub and will start the team’s Week 1 game against the New York Jets.

FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer was the first to break the news on Twitter:

Carr decimated the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks’ second string defense last week, connecting on 11 of 13 passes for 143 yards and three scores. He ended the preseason with a lofty passer rating of 105.2. While exhibition games are hardly an indicator of real-life NFL success, it’s clear that Carr had far surpassed Schaub as the No. 1 man in Oakland.

After suffering an elbow injury, Schaub reportedly cannot throw the ball accurately downfield right now, making the team’s decision all the more obvious. Schaub is in the first year with Oakland after a dismal season in Houston last year forced him to find a new home.

Things aren’t getting started well for him in California, however. Whether or not Schaub sees any playing time when healthy will largely depend on the success of second round pick Carr, who played his college ball at nearby Fresno St.

The rookie has looked flawless, far surpassing the performance of his former No. 1 overall pick brother David. But in the talented AFC West, will Carr be able to succeed as the counterpart to elite quarterbacks like Peyton Manning?
