Roger Federer Knows it’s Difficult for Him to Win Roland Garros Again: Toni Nadal

Toni Nadal, the uncle and coach of 9-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal, served up his opinion on Roger Federer’s clay-curtailed schedule for the upcoming season, stating that the Swiss chose to give the clay-court tournaments a miss as he knows his chances of triumphing at the Roland Garros are remote.

This comes after Federer, the 2009 champion here, divulged his tentative schedule for 2016 season that didn’t have the Masters events in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome. This implies that he will directly claim his stake at the season’s second Grand Slam event.

But, unlike many, this decision didn’t take Toni by surprise, who believes Federer knows his strengths and weaknesses, which is why he opted to cut down on the clay events.

“He knows that his chances of winning Roland Garros are remote and wants to focus on areas where he plays better,” Toni was quoted as saying by “This year, he did well. (He) has enough quality to stay on top a few more years.”

But, Federer insists that he trimmed down on clay events to save energy for the bust second half of the season. “I am also trying to save my energy and take care of my mental strength for what will follow: French Open, Wimbledon, all lawn tennis events,” he said.
