It’s looking like the Cincinnati Bengals will get star wide receiver A.J. Green back in Week 9, but another important piece of their offense has been ruled out this Sunday.

Starting running back Giovani Bernard missed practice all week dealing with hip and rib injuries, prompting the team to give him some much-needed rest. Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis told that the down time will be beneficial for the second-year Bernard, who’s taken some bone-crunching hits the past three weeks:

“The rest is going to be good for him,” Lewis said.

The Bengals will face Jacksonville at home in Week 9. After that, they’ll make a quick turnaround to host cross state rival Cleveland on Thursday Night Football in Week 10. Because of the lack of preparation time, Lewis said he doesn’t know if Bernard will be ready for that game:

“We’ll cross those bridges then.”

In Bernard’s place will step rookie running back Jeremy Hill, who has 195 yards and three touchdowns on 50 carries so far. The LSU product is more of a bruising type of back than Hill, but he has shown some promise in the passing game as well.

Set up with a cake match-up against the 1-6 Jacksonville Jaguars, Hill could be in line for upwards of 20 touches, making him one of the top-ranked running backs for fantasy in Week 9.

The Bengals are in first place in the gritty AFC North, but injuries are undoubtedly taking a toll on their path to success. Having Hill ready to step in for Bernard is crucial, yet they could definitely use both of their feature backs as they push towards a perceived playoff run.

Cincinnati has played “Gio’s” injuries off as not that serious, but it’s clear that the mounting abuse is taking a serious toll on the relatively small running back’s frame.

Will he return to action in Week 10? Even if he does, will his body be able to hold up to the massive amount of punishment that an NFL running back absorbs on a weekly basis?
