A.J. Green On Track To Return In Week 9

After missing three straight games dealing with a toe ligament issue, Cincinnati Bengals star wideout A.J. Green has been making progress towards playing his first game since October 5. He returned to full practice on Wednesday (October 29, 2014), and got in another limited session on Thursday.

He was spotted in full pads at practice Friday, signaling that a Week 9 return is likely eminent for Green. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis spoke up to The Cincinnati Enquirer to voice his opinion that Green is fully on track to play:

“If everything stays the way it is, he’ll play.”

That’s incredibly good news for the Bengals, who went a middling 1-1-1 in Green’s absence. Aside from the promising play of No. 2 wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, the passing game has noticeably lacked much of the explosiveness that the elite play of Green brought to the table.

He’s expected to be affected by the injury for the remainder of the season, but Nike designed a special shoe for him that is supposed to limit the pain. As is the case with many football injuries, it will often come down to the player’s willingness to push through pain.

Green has been aching to get back on the field, so his toughness has never been in question. However, it’s also a matter of keeping him somewhat healthy for the Bengals’ perceived playoff push late in the season. They got destroyed 27-0 by the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7, and much of that loss was due to their ineptitude in the passing game.

It’s clear that the Bengals need Green at as close to full strength as possible.

Thankfully for them, the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars will come into town in Week 9, and there’s not a better return match-up that Green could hope for.

Will he quickly return to top-flight status, or will 2014 turn out to be a down year for the wildly talented wide receiver?
