6th seed Simona Halep overcame a second-set blackout to prevail over fellow Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3 0-6 6-1, as she dug her way into the semi-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open on Thursday.

Halep was on the top of her game initially, converting 69 percent of her first-serve points, held on to her serve each time, and broke her opponent twice to bag the opening set 6-3. Begu, however, succeeded in turning things around quickly to take the second set 6-0 by the virtue of her dominating serve. But eventually, it was Halep who rode on her supreme experience to pull off the decisive set, and the match.

Slovakian veteran Dominika Cibulkova also advanced to the last-four stage following a 4-6 6-3 6-3 win over Romanian Sorana Cirstea after a grueling quarterfinal clash that went on for over two hours. Up next for her awaits American qualifier Louisa Chirico, who extended her dream run by defeating Australia Daria Gavrilova 7-6 6-2.

In the women’s doubles event, top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis eased past the Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 6-3 6-2 to go through to the semi-finals.
