14-time Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal, insists that his long-term goal is to play for as many years as possible and not to regain the top spot in the men’s rankings.

“For me it won’t be a goal in my career anymore. If I have become No.1 because of the results I have, it’s great,” Nadal was quoted as saying by Tennis-X. “But I’m not going to pursue this objective. I will follow my schedule.”

28-year-old Nadal, who turned pro in 2001, further mentioned that he is eyeing longevity in his illustrious career.

“My big goal is to play as many years as possible,” he continued. “What I won’t do is put at risk the best years of my career to get the No. 1 spot. It won’t be anymore an objective for me. My goal is to be happy and I think I am.”

Currently gearing up for the upcoming season, Nadal is scheduled to compete at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi this week.
