Wimbledon Champion Marion Bartoli Backs Sania Mirza to Win a Medal at Rio Olympics

Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli backed India’s top-ranked doubles tennis player Sania Mirza for a podium finish at the prestigious Rio Olympics 2016.

Mirza has been enjoying an unprecedented camaraderie on court with Switzerland’s Martina Hingis, with the duo pulling off a record 12 titles since teaming up in March last year.

With both Mirza and Hingis set to part ways for the sport’s mega-event to represent their respective countries, the twosome can be on collision course in the mixed doubles event.

Whilst Hingis will be seen in action alongside veteran Roger Federer, Mirza is yet to firm up with either of her countrymen – Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna.

Bartoli, therefore, believes that although Mirza would be one of the frontrunners to win a mixed doubles medal, facing her routine partner from the opposite side would not be easy.

“They (Mirza and partner) will probably have to face Federer and Martina. So it can be tough for them. It can be difficult when you play against your partner. It is mentally very difficult,” Bartoli told IANS.

“But I am sure they could be in for a medal. But the colour of the medal will depend on the draw.”

The Rio Oympics is scheduled to kick-off from August 5.
