Roger Federer survived an early scare as he rallied from one set down to prevail 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 over No. 190 Sumit Nagal in the first round of the US Open on Monday.

India’s Nagal, making his Grand Slam debut after winning three qualifying matches, made Federer grind for two hours and 29 minutes on Arther Ashe Stadium.

No wonder, the Swiss maestro was impressed with the debutant, predicting a ‘solid’ career ahead.

“I think he knows what he can bring. That’s why I think he’s going to have a very solid career,” the 20-time Grand Slam champion said of Nagal.

“But, of course it’s not the game that comes out with the biggest surprises. It’s really consistent. I think he did it very well tonight.”

Federer further observed the 22-year-old’s style would make him a tough nut to crack on clay courts.

“I think his game is based on being really consistent, moving well, moving the ball around well,” the 37-year-old said, making it clear he did his homework ahead of the contest.

“Sort of very much a clay-courter. That’s also the surface he’s basically played the entire year almost,” he added of Nagal, who has featured in as many as 12 clay events since March this year.

And, did he ever confuse Nagal with his arch-rival (Rafael) Nadal? “No,” he replied. “But may be for you guys and social media it is.”

Federer will face Damir Dzumhur next.
