Gael Monfils suffered a stunning 6-7 7-5 6-4 defeat at the hands of little-known Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain to crash out of the Estoril Open on Friday.

The Frenchman, seeded third, looked ineffective on his first serve, winning a meagre 56 per cent of the points while not being able to fire even a single ace all through the battle that went on for two hours and 14 minutes.

Yet, there was a moment when Monfils won hearts.

Just before the third set would lock up at 4-4, Davidovich over-stretched while attempting to return a cross-court forehand at the net. He appeared to have injured his right hand as he lay in pain, before Monfils rushed to the other side of the net to check if he was fine.

No wonder, the crowd appreciated Monfils’ gesture.

Davidovich, who is best known for winning the Wimbledon Juniors’ title in 2017, quickly regrouped to win the next two games that set him up a semi-final date with Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas.
