Perhaps ethical, underhand serves are not illegal in tennis. Making the most of it, Benjamin Bonzi tried to trick his opponent with one such shot during the French Open qualifiers on Monday.

Serving at 5-6 down in third set of his first-round qualifying match against Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan, the French youngster unleashed an underhand serve as he went to push the tie into tie-breaker.

The trick shot, however, failed to inspire the 21-year-old to a victory as he eventually went down 7-6(3) 4-6 7-6(1).

This is not the first time an underhand serve has made the news.

At the season-opening ASB Classic in New Zealand, Robin Haase ditched the orthodox serve during his quarter-final match against Peter Gojowczyk.

Closer to date, Sara Errani surprised Kateryna Bondarenko with an underhand serve en route to wining the Oracle Challenger title in March.
