Andy Murray appeared in high spirits as he made his singles comeback at the Cincinnati Masters on Monday.

Perhaps wanting to savour the moment, the three-time Grand Slam champion had video recording on in his mobile phone while entering the court. No wonder, the crowd loved it as their cheers got louder.

Murray, after all, was playing a singles match for the first time since undergoing a second knee surgery, which almost pulled the curtains on his career. His last appearance in singles ended in a first round defeat (to Roberto Bautista Agut) at the Australian Open in January this year.

The comeback, however, didn’t have a happy ending as Murray was handed a 4-6 4-6 defeat at the hands of French veteran Richard Gasquet in the first round of the Masters 1000 event.

Although Murray opined he played ‘okay’, he was quick to rule out playing singles at the upcoming US Open.

“We were hoping to maybe hold a wild card until a little bit closer to the time to see how I feel and get some matches hopefully and a bit of practice,” the 32-year-old was quoted as saying by ATP.

He added: “[It was] a decision I made with my team. I didn’t want to take a wild card today because I just didn’t know how I was going to feel after a match. I felt like I wanted to be fair for me to maybe try and get a couple of matches in before making a decision like that.”

Gasquet will face 4th seed Dominic Thiem of Austria in the second round.
