Newly-crowned world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki complained of excessive grunting during her second-round match against Romania’s Monica Niculescu at the Qatar Total Open in Doha on Thursday.

At 4-4 in the first set, Wozniacki – visibly enraged by Niculescu’s effort-expressing sounds – went up to chair umpire Emmanuel Joseph to raise her complain. The Dane claimed her opponent was grunting even when she wasn’t hitting.

“It isn’t in the rule book that you are not allowed to grunt when the opposing player hits? It’s the only way she can win” Wozniacki said before going on to mock Niculescu’s grunts.

The slight delay turned out to be favourable for Wozniacki as she went on to register a 7-5 6-1 win and set up a blockbuster quarter-final against Germany’s former No. 1 Angelique Kerber.

Wozniacki, however, was not done with her criticism of Niculescu. “It was a tough match. She tried to irritate me, I made some dumb mistakes. She tries to get inside your head. She used unfair methods, but it is what it is,” she told afterward.
