Alexander Shakutin, the Chairman of Belarusian Tennis Federation, put forth an optimistic anticipation from country’s icon player, Victoria Azarenka, for this year’s Olympics to be held in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janerio come August.

“Today every player has an individual plan to prepare for important competitions of the year. This year we have the Rio Olympics. We hope Victoria Azarenka will surprise us all,” Mr. Shakutin was quoted as saying by eng.belta.by.

Once ranked No. 1 in the world rankings, Azarenka continues to enjoy her way back to the top. Barring her semi-final loss at the Australian Open to eventual champion Angelique Kerber, Azarenka is yet to lose a match this year (9-1).

Although impressed by her form that makes her one of the favorites to win the gold at the sport’s mega-event, Mr. Shakutin believes that Azarenka will have to be at her best to be able to do so. “She must do her best to win the singles gold. She has real chances for it.”

Notably, the 26-year-old Azarenka had a flourishing outing at the 2012 London Olympics, where she not only won the bronze medal in singles, but also joined forces with compatriot Max Mirnyi to pull off the gold medal in mixed doubles event.
