Juan Martin del Potro, who steered Argentina to its first Davis Cup title over the weekend, will begin his 2017 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland that is scheduled to be held from January 2-7.

Del Potro, 28, returned to action earlier this year after a recurring wrist injury sidelined him for about two years. The former US Open champion, however, continued from where he had left.

The highlight of his season was winning the silver medal at the Rio Olympics, where he upset multiple Grand Slam champions Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal before going down to defending champion and present World No. 1 Andy Murray in the gold medal match.

Besides that, he also won the If Stockholm Open title in October before winning both his rubbers to help Argentina lay hands on the Davis Cup trophy for the first time ever.

Tournament director Karl Budge was vocal of his admiration for del Potro. “His year has been incredible, especially to beat two current world number ones (Djokovic and Nadal),” he said.

“He is back winning ATP Tour titles and just steered Argentina to their first Davis Cup crown. It’s a hell of a comeback. He is the player that none of the big four want to draw in Melbourne,” Budge added of the Australian Open that runs later in January.
