In a huge blow to the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka has pulled out of the ATP 500 event due to knee injury.

The Swiss, a three-time Grand Slam champion, had some issues in his knee during the recently-concluded Australian Open 2017, where he made it to the semi-finals before going down fighting to compatriot and eventual winner Roger Federer in a five-setter.

“Stan called me to share a bad news. A test showed that he cannot play with an injured knee,” tournament Richard Krajicek was quoted as saying.

In Wawrinka’s absence, former World No. 1 and 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is slated to lead the field that also comprises the likes of No. 7 Marin Cilic and No. 8 Dominic Thiem.

The tournament is scheduled to be held from February 13-19.
