22-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams will kick-start her 2017 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, the tournament officials confirmed on Wednesday.

“We are obviously over the moon with this news. Serena is one of the biggest sporting stars on the planet,” said tournament director Karl Budge, as quoted by NZ Herald.

“To have an athlete of Serena’s caliber come to Auckland is going to be huge for New Zealand and cements the ASB Classic as our biggest annual sporting event,” he added.

This would mark the 35-year-old’s first-ever appearance here. And the American powerhouse believes that the tournament will be an ideal run-up for the prestigious Australian Open.

“I am really excited to be coming to Auckland for the first time,” she said. “The ASB Classic is the first event of the year and it can really set you up for a great run in Melbourne.”

Joining Williams in the star-studded line-up would be her elder sister Venus Williams, former World No. 1s Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki, and two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova to name a few.

The tournament is scheduled to be held from January 2-7 on the hard courts of ASB Tennis Centre.
