Serena Williams Survives No. 1 Ranking Scare as Karolina Pliskova Nears Top 10 in WTA Rankings

Serena Williams just about clung on to number one in the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) rankings after Angelique Kerber failed to win the Western & Southern Open title in Cincinnati.

Had the second-ranked Kerber clinched the title here, she would have conquered Williams’ long-standing numero uno position. It, however, was not to be as Karolina Pliskova pulled off a stunner to upset Kerber in the final, winning 6-3 6-1 in what turned out to be a lopsided contest.

Meanwhile, Pliskova inched closer to regaining her place in the top 10 as she jumped six places to No. 11.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep swapped positions to be ranked No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

The most notable loser was former World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, who reached the semi-finals of Cincinnati last year but didn’t turn up for the event this time around. Ranked 29th before this week, she has now dropped to No. 41 in the list.
