In a day marred by rain at the French Open, David Ferrer and Serena Williams advanced to the fourth round in the men’s and women’s category respectively on Saturday.

Serena was troubled by Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic but eventually managed to emerge victorious. The American won 6-4 7-6 in a third-round battle that was delayed for about two and a half hours by rain.

Later in the day, Serena was joined by her elder sister Venus in the fourth round. The senior Williams, seeded ninth, moved past Alize Cornet with a 7-6 1-6 6-0 triumph.

Elsewhere, 14th seed Ana Ivanovic crashed out of the tournament after going down 4-6 4-6 to 18th seed Elina Svitolina.

In the men’s division, Ferrer put up a sublime performance to record a straight-set conquest of fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Ferrer, seeded 11th, won 6-4 7-6 6-1 to progress to the round of 16.

Top seed Novak Djokovic also advanced to the next round following a 6-2 6-3 6-3 victory against an unseeded opponent in Aljaz Bedene.

Tomas Berdych, the No. 7 seed, rallied from one-set deficit to score a 4-6 6-3 6-2 7-5 beating of  Uruguayan 25th seed Pablo Cuevas.
