Serena Williams’ quest of winning her first title of the season continued as she pulled out of the Rogers Cup final due to an injury.

Playing against local star Bianca Andreescu on Sunday, Williams was trailing 1-3 in the first set when she faced some trouble with her back. Just 19 minutes into the contest, she couldn’t continue anymore as she broke down in tears.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t do it today. I tried but I just couldn’t do it,” an emotional Williams was quoted as saying by wwos.

“It’s been a tough year but we’ll keep going,” added the 37-year-old, who lost in the finals of Wimbledon and US Open as well.

19-year-old Andreescu, who has had her fair share of injuries in her nascent career so far, was courteous enough to go up to Williams and console her.

“You’re going to bounce back,” Andreescu told Williams, as quoted by WTA. “You’ve dealt with so much in your career, this is just a minor setback for a major comeback, I’m sure.”

Meanwhile, Andreescu has pulled out of next week’s event in Cincinnati.

Williams, on the other hand, is still in the draw. Should she decide to play on, she will face Zarina Diyas in the first round on Tuesday.
