10th seed Milos Raonic survived an early blow as he scraped past 119th-ranked Marco Ceccchinato 6-4 4-6 6-4 in an intense first-round battle at the Rome Masters on Monday. The Canadian powerhouse surprisingly looked rusty – even with his serve – throughout the match, but managed to hold on to his nerves at crucial junctures to eventually prevail in two hours and 9 minutes.

Next up for Raonic awaits Australian star Nick Kyrgios in what promises to be a blockbuster second-round clash. The unseeded Kyrgios, who upset some big names en route the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters last week, produced a stellar performance here to destroy World No. 251 Salvatore Caruso 6-1 6-2 in the opening-round match that ended exactly in an hour on Grandstand.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet, the No. 11 seed, made short work of countryman Julien Benneteau, winning 6-3 6-0 for his fourth win in as many matches against the same opponent.

Venus, Safarova advance in women’s singles

In the women’s action, Venus Williams made a winning return after a month-long absence as she registered a straight-set 6-4 6-3 conquest of fellow American Coco Vandeweghe.

Elsewhere, 10th seed Lucie Safarova produced a clinical performance to rout former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, 6-3 6-2.

It was, however, curtains for No. 14 seed Sara Errani, No. 15 Elina Svitolina, and No. 16 Karolina Pliskova, all of whom faced stunning first-round defeats to their respective unseeded counterparts.
