Roger Federer will begin his 2017 season by participating at the Hopman Cup. The Swiss superstar had won the mixed-team event in 2001 when he joined forces with compatriot Martina Hingis to lift the trophy.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion had also partook the subsequent year with wife Mirka, but was unable to defend the crown. 15 years down the line, Federer will partner 19-year-old Belinda Bencic when the tournament begins from January 1 at Perth Arena.

“I think it will be a perfect tournament for me to start the season,” the 34-year-old was quoted as saying by “I like to play in new places. It’s always really exciting, so I can’t wait.”

Bencic, a former World No. 7, also expressed excitement on teaming up with Federer and competing at the tournament for the first time.

“I’m very much looking forward to playing with Roger in the mixed doubles and representing my country at the Hopman Cup,” she said. “I’ve not been to Perth before but I’ve heard great things and can’t wait to check out the city.”

Tournament Format

The eighth participating countries field two players, with the mixed doubles encounter following the women’s singles and men’s singles matches in the best-of-three format. The teams are divided into two groups, with the table-toppers clashing in the finals.
