Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova Headline Star-Studded Field for Brisbane International

Defending champion Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova will be among the top players to warm up for the Australian Open 2016 by competing at the season-opening tournament, Brisbane International, which is scheduled to be held from January 3-10 at the Queensland Tennis Centre.

“We’re thrilled to welcome our two defending champions (Federer and Sharapova) back to Brisbane, who will both have a real fight on their hands to win back-to-back titles,” said Tournament Director Cameron Pearson of the duo that pulled off the men’s and women’s title respectively this season.

Besides the third-ranked Federer, the men’s field comprises of seven other Top 20 players – Kei Nishikori (World No. 8), Marin Cilic (13), last year’s finalist Milos Raonic (14), Gilles Simon (15), David Goffin (16), local favourite Bernard Tomic (18), and Dominic Thiem (20).

On the women’s side, the fourth-ranked Sharapova is projected to have a stiff competition with the likes of Simona Halep (No. 2), Garbine Muguruza (3) drafted in the draw. Besides, the field includes six other Top 20 players like Angelique Kerber (10) and Timea Bacsinszky (12) among them.
