World No. 3 Roger Federer has been heaped with inspiring words from one of his closest rivals of all time, Pete Sampras, who feels that it will be thoughtless to write off the former for the upcoming US Open 2015.

The 33-year-old Federer has failed to add on to his 17-Slam tally since the last three years, with his top rivals – Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal emerging victorious ahead of him. However, Sampras has backed the Swiss to have another shot.

“I do think there is (a chance),” Sampras was quoted as saying by IOL Sport. “I think he’s playing well, he’s fit, he hits the ball great. He’s doing everything that he’s been doing for years,” he added further.

Sampras, however, said although the top-ranked Djokovic is the man to beat, Federer has a chance at US Open if things fall in place.

“Wimbledon I think is his best chance, but the US Open – he’s won there five times, he knows what he’s doing. I think he’s got a good shot, but I think obviously Novak is the man to beat.”

The US Open 2015 is scheduled to kick-start from August 31 at the renowned Flushing Meadows.
