Frenchman Richard Gasquet suffered a back injury while representing the Philippine Mavericks at the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) that put his Australian Open participation in the shade. But, the 29-year-old is confident of getting in grove before the new season kicks-off in a fortnight’s time.

Gasquet, who pulled out of the IPTL last week, asserted that although he has not yet resumed his training for the upcoming season, he would not write off his odds of recovering beforehand, even as he is unsure of making it to the season-opening Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha.

“I have not yet resumed training. I have a short week shutdown. I’ll see how the recovery will happen,” Gasquet told “I do not think it’s like the last time when I had stopped two months. I’m pretty positive. There is still much time; I draw no line on the Australian Open.

“Doha, we’ll see. I’ll try to have a good training block before the recovery.”

Gasquet also spoke about his goals for the next season, labeling the Davis Cup, the Olympics, and the Grand Slams as his prime objectives. He also divulged that he is hoping to participate in the doubles event at the Olympics next year, even as he’s not decided as to who would be his partner.
