Rafael Nadal has agreed to begin his 2017 season at Brisbane International that is scheduled to be held from January 1-8 at Queensland Tennis Centre.

Nadal, who has preferred to participate at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha since 2009, is set to fill in the void of former champion Roger Federer, who decided to move to the Hopman Cup instead.

“It’s going to be the first time in my career that I’m going to play in Australia the first week of the season and I’m really excited about it,” Nadal told the tournament’s official website.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion insists that it’s the ideal way to tune-up for the prestigious Australian Open that ensues just a week after the tournament ends.

“I think this is something I have to do during my career and I think at the same time it’s going to be a great preparation to be in Australia early,” he added.

The tournament offers 250 ranking points and $72,000 as prize money to the winner here.
