Serena Williams made her Grand Slam return at the French Open with a 7-6 6-4 win over Kristyna Pliskova on Tuesday.

The American superstar, who missed almost 13 months of action to give birth to her daughter Olympia, looked far from her best, prompting reporters to ask her if she was here to compete or to win.

“I don’t know. I mean, I’m definitely here to compete and do the best that I can do,” the 23-time Major winner replied.

“I think deep down we all know the answer to that,” she added.

Her coach Patrick Mourtaglou refused to corroborate though. In a chat with Sport360, he said there’s no reason to doubt if Serena can add more Majors to her tally.

“I don’t doubt [she will win more Grand Slams], that’s not my style and when you work with Serena you’re not supposed to doubt and there’s no reason to doubt because she’s achieved everything she wanted to achieve,” Mouratoglou said.

“I’m confident she will,” he added of Serena, who is scheduled to face 17th seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia in the second round on Thursday.
