Former World No. 1 Mats Wilander heaped praise on David Goffin after the Belgian tennis star produced a clinical performance to pull off a straight-set 6-3 6-3 6-4 win over Frenchman Gregoire Barrere in the first round of the prestigious Roland Garros 2016.

The baby-faced Goffin has seen a steep rise in his career in the recent past, with the 25-year-old climbing to his career-best ranking of No. 13 in the world. In the process, he has beaten the likes of Marin Cilic, Stanislas Wawrinka, and Tomas Berdych to name a few.

That said, Wilander believes that Goffin is not far away from challenging the biggest names in the sport.

“What is the difference between Goffin and (World No. 1) Novak Djokovic? There is not that many,” the 51-year-old was quoted as saying by

“Yes, Djokovic is a little larger, is a little better. In short, there is no reason why Goffin cannot become a new Lleyton Hewitt. For me, he’s a modern version of David Ferrer,” he added, weighing the Belgian against some of the sport’s superstars.

Meanwhile, Goffin is scheduled to cross the swords with Argentine Carlos Berlocq in the second round of the French Open on Thursday.
