When on court, Gael Monfils is expected to do out-of-the-box things. But on Wednesday, he took his maverick tag to another level.

Up against Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in the second round of the ongoing Mutua Madrid Open, the Frenchman showed off his athleticism by pulling off an incredible point.

Towards the end of the second set, Fucsovics played a drop shot mid-rally, which Monfils managed to return after coming on to the net. The former then responded with a lofted backhand volley, almost ensuring he won the point.

Wasn’t to be though as Monfils played a spinning jump-shot, which his opponent just didn’t see coming. No wonder, he wore a proud smile on his face as the crowd applauded.

Would you have him in the shot of the year contender?

Monfils went on to rally from one set down to clinch a 1-6 6-4 6-2 win over Fucsovics and set up a third round clash with 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer.
