Alexander Zverev beat David Goffin 6-3 3-6 6-3 in the Italian Open quarter-finals earlier this week. It wasn’t all fair and square though, if the latter’s claim is to be believed.

Goffin alleged that Zverev made unnecessary delays like frequently changing rackets and taking too long between points during their one-hour 47-minute battle last Thursday.

“He doesn’t care a bit about others,” Goffin said of Zverev after their battle ended late at night.

Earlier during the week, however, Zverev had said that he’s comfortable playing late-night matches.

“For me, luckily I am somebody who can sleep very long into the day.” The 21-year-old told UbiTennis in an exclusive chat.

“I went to bed around three [Thursday morning], but I woke up around one [Thursday afternoon]. For me, I still got my ten hours of sleep. That’s the most important for me.

“I obviously got the whole day push back a little bit, but I felt good on the court. Playing late is not an issue.”

The sleep pattern seems to have worked in Zverev’s favour as he went on to finish as runner-up, losing a three-set battle to Rafael Nadal.
