Ace Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova accentuated the significance of the season-opening Brisbane International event as she insisted that the tournament provides the best platform to get in the groove for the prestigious Australian Open 2016 that begins later in January.

Slated to make her third successive appearance in Brisbane, the 28-year-old will look for an encore of her last year’s performance that saw her bag the crown. But, the likes of Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza and Victoria Azarenka will certainly mix things up. And, she couldn’t agree more!

“It is the only one I play leading up to the Australian Open and you want to play the best in the world and this is the toughest event during this week,” Sharapova was quoted as saying by “That’s why I’ve chosen it the last few years.

“I started this event quite late in my career, but once I did, I just felt it was the best preparation I could have going into the first Grand Slam of the year,” added the Russian, who went on to win 10 consecutive matches in 2015 following her Brisbane title.

The main draw of the Brisbane International 2016 is scheduled to kick-off from January 4 at the Queensland Tennis Centre.
