The opening day’s play of the Brisbane International 2015 witnessed some notable upsets, as some big names made an early exit from the season’s first tournament Down Under.

The series of some stunners began with Ajla Tomljanovic’s 7-6, 6-0 win over 6th-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic.

“When I saw the draw I knew I’d have to play excellent to beat Jelena today,” Tomljanovic expressed her happiness after the win, as quoted by “I really went out there and had nothing to lose,” she continued.

“I think knowing that I put in the work in the off-season helped my confidence, even though it was the first match of the season and you’re not supposed to be too confident.

“But knowing you’ve done the work really helps when you’re out there and playing.”

The other notable names to crash out of the tournament are 5th seed Andrea Petkovic and local favorite Samantha Stosur. While the former lost to Kaia Kanepi 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, the latter went down to American Varvara Lepchenko 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Meanwhile, 7th seed Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, and Elina Svitolina thrashed Magdalena Rybarikova 6-0, 6-2 to enter the second round.
