No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova saved 2 match-points as she survived a scare to go through to the third round of the Australian Open 2015. The Russian needed 2 hours and 32 minutes to pull off a nervy 6-1 4-6 7-5 conquest of compatriot Alexandra Panova in the second-round battle at the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday.

Sharapova had a tensed outing against her little-known counterpart, who failed to consolidate while serving for the match at 5-4 up in the third set, and eventually, Sharapova went on to win 3 games in a row to dodge an early bullet at the prestigious tournament Down Under.

“At the end of the day it’s always nice to come through a challenge like that,” a relieved Sharapova was quoted as saying by the tournament’s official site. “That’s the biggest positive out of the match. I thought my thought process through the match to that point was pretty negative.”

Meanwhile, 7th seed Eugenie Bouchard had a swift sail into the third round, following her 6-0 6-3 win over Dutch Kiki Bertens in just 54 minutes at the Margaret Court Arena here.

Up next, Bouchard is slated to lock horns with French journeywoman Caroline Garcia for a place in the pre-quarterfinals.
