Just when it looked like Victoria Azarenka is slowly getting back to her best, her run was cut short by an injury.

That’s what perhaps went through her mind as she broke down after being forced to retire midway during the quarter-finals of Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose on Friday.

Azarenka was leading 7-6 0-3 against American Danielle Collins when she couldn’t continue due to back injury as she burst into tears while being surrounded by her physio.

Azarenka, a former world No. 1 and a two-time Grand Slam champion, has been on a comeback trail after missing months of action due to personal issues.

As for Collins, who was a surprise semi-finalist at the Miami Open this year, she is scheduled to face Maria Sakkari of Greece in the last-four stage on Sunday.

“I’m not entirely sure what happened, but it’s never fun winning a match like that,” Collins said. “Hopefully [Azarenka] can get back on the horse pretty soon.

“I’m really having a great year, and happy to get these wins and get more and more experience under my belt.”
