Why Dominika Cibulkova, Heather Watson don’t want Serena Williams to get Wimbledon seeding

Serena Williams should not be seeded at next week’s Wimbledon Championships, according to Slovak tennis player Dominika Cibulkova.

The reason is pretty understandable. The 32nd-ranked Cibulkova doesn’t want to miss out on a seeding, which will be the case if Williams gets a seeding.

The seedings committee is set to roll out the final list later on Wednesday, but Cibulkova is adamant it will not be fair if Williams features in it.

“I think it’s just not fair. I have tried and I should be seeded. If they put her in front of me then I will lose my spot that I am supposed to have,” the former Australian Open finalist was quoted as saying by BBC.

“I was a former number four, and it’s also like why should I not be seeded if I have the right to be?”

This comes just hours after British player Heather Watson, too, had similar views, opining mothers should not have protected rankings as pregnancy is ‘not an injury’.

But, she had Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, as an exception to the case.

“It’s a really tough one because I would say Serena is the exception. For her, specifically, yeah, I would seed Serena,” Watson said following her first round win over Kristina Mladenovic in Eastbourne.

“I don’t think that you should have a protected ranking if you have a baby because it’s your choice to have that baby.

“Injuries aren’t a choice. You can have tournaments taken away from you just because you’re just not actually physically able to play.”

Do you agree or disagree with them?
