Roger Federer returns to top 10 after Australian Open triumph

Roger Federer ended a five-year Grand Slam drought by winning his 18th Major at the Australian Open 2017 in Melbourne on Sunday.

The victory has seen Federer — who started the season-opening Slam at No. 17 in the ATP rankings —break back into the top 10 in the latest release.

With a total of 3260 points, the Swiss maestro has jumped seven places to No. 10.

Federer, who was making a comeback after a six-month injury layoff, prevailed 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 over arch-rival Rafael Nadal of Spain in the title clash.

A runner-up finish saw Nadal jump three positions to No. 7, whilst Britain’s Andy Murray and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic retained their No. 1 and No. 2 ranking respectively.

Stanislas Wawrinka, who made it to the semi-finals Down Under, swapped places with Milos Raonic as the duo stand No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

Meanwhile, in the women’s rankings, Serena Williams — by the virtue of her 23rd Grand Slam trophy — reclaimed the No. 1 position from Angelique Kerber.
