Top seed Novak Djokovic continued his quest for an elusive French Open title after clinching a straight-set win over Steve Darcis of Belgium to advance to the third round on Thursday.

The Serb looked a bit rusty initially but improved as the match progressed to pull off a 7-5 6-3 6-4 conquest – his third victory against the same opponent in as many meetings.

Moving on, Djokovic is scheduled to square-off against Aljaz Bedene for a place in the pre-quarterfinals.

Nine-time champion Rafael Nadal of Spain also had a routine day in the office as he became just the eighth player in the history of the sport to record 200 Grand Slam triumphs.

The Spaniard took just 96 minutes to register a 6-3 6-0 6-3 thrashing of Argentine Facundo Bagnis. Up next in the third round, he will face off against countryman Marcel Granollers.

Women’s top seed Serena Williams produced a clinical performance as she squandered just three games en route a 6-2 6-1 victory against Brazilian Teliana Pereira in the second round.

The elder Williams, Venus, also made further progress following a 6-2 6-1 humiliation of fellow American Louisa Chirico.

Elsewhere, Timea Bacsinszky (defeated Eugenie Bouchard) and Ana Ivanovic (defeated Kurumi Nara) also moved on to the round of 32.
