Belarusian tennis star Victoria Azarenka rode on her red-hot form to move past Britain’s Laura Robson 6-4 6-2 in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday.

The fourth-seeded Azarenka looked rusty with her serve in the first set as she not only committed four doubles faults, but also managed to win just 33 percent  points on her second serve. She, however, managed to break Robson’s serve twice to eventually bag the opening set 6-4.

Azarenka, then, got her foot going as the match progressed. With an improved serve, she pulled off 83 percent of her first-serve points that anchored her way to a 6-2 closedown, which saw her emerge victorious in the opening battle that lasted one hour and 24 minutes.

Seeds Tumble…

However, it turned out to be a surprising day for the rest of the seeds here. Among the ones to face premature exits were top seeds Agnieszka Radwanksa and Angelique Kerber.

While Radwanksa ran out of gas to leak away a 6-4 6-7 6-3 defeat to Slovakian star Dominika Cibulkova, Kerber proved no match for Czech journeywoman Barbora Strycova, who, surprisingly, sealed the encounter in straight sets, winning 6-4 6-2.

Elsewhere, Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard also lost out to Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4 3-6 6-4 in a marathon battle that went on for two hours and 32 minutes.
