Former tennis great Martina Navratilova reflected on the fierce competition in the women’s circuit at present, opining that although Serena Williams stands out among the rest of her counterparts, players like Victoria Azarenka and Angelique Kerber have closed in on the gap.

“We have been saying we needed rivalries and just now we’ve started having,” Navratilova was quoted as saying by Puntodebreak. “It will be difficult for Williams to maintain the advantage, although she is still the queen. But the reality is that the margin is getting smaller.”

The top-ranked Williams, who is also a 21-time Grand Slam champion, has certainly been the most dominant player in the last few years. But, with Azarenka resurging and Kerber peaking to her best, the American has faced some stiff competition, especially from the duo of late.

While Azarenka has, by far, been the best player of the season with an impressive 24-2 record that comprises of her title wins in Brisbane, Indian Wells, and Miami, Kerber (26-7) emerged as the surprise winner at the Australian Open, where she stunned Williams (13-4) in the summit clash.

Further opining on this, Navratilova added: “It is fantastic to see players who can approach her (Williams). I am impressed by what she (Azarenka) did at Indian Wells and Miami. And, of course, also Angelique Kerber, who beat Serena in a Grand Slam final.”
