Venus Williams Wimbledon run ended as early as in the first round after she was upset 4-6 4-6 by 15-year-old fellow American Cori Gauff on Monday.

Venus, a five-time champion at the All England Club, proved she’s nearing the end of her illustrious career after putting on a dull show against an inexperienced opponent. The contest lasted one hour and 19 minutes on Court No. 1.

“She played very well. I actually didn’t play well. So, it was a contrast of both sides,” the 39-year-old kept her answer simple when asked to reflect on the outcome.

That wasn’t the only brief answer that she gave during the post-match press conference. As pointed out by journalist Stuart Fraser, all Venus spoke were 155 words against 12 questions.

What did she tell her after the match? “Yeah, just well done and good luck, you know.”

What does Wimbledon mean to her? “I have had some amazing times here. I love it.”

Meanwhile, Gauff will look to back up the win when she next faces Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia in the second round.
