Table Tennis Star Fined $45,000 For Victory Celebration [Video]
Chinese table tennis Olympic champion Zhang Jike received a hefty fine for his victory celebration this week…..
Chinese table tennis ace Zhang Jike took part, and won the Liebherr men’s tournament this week, but it was marred by an unfortunate sequence of events. A long and exciting game with countryman Ma Long, ended with Jike winning, and getting a little carried away.
His victory celebration consisted of kicking multiple sponsorship signs, causing them to shatter, and removing his shirt before tossing it in to the crowd. The rather unsightly victory celebration ended up costing the Chinese sportsman all his prize money; approx. $45,000 in USD.
Check out what Zhang had to say to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF):
“I am very sorry for what I did. It was not acceptable behaviour and I am sorry.”
Although the infraction was not the most offensive or extreme we’ve seen from sports over the years, it was enough to catch the attention of the ITTF and cost Jike his prize pot for the event.
Without further ado, here is the video of Zhang Jike’s (controversial) victory celebration
