Just mere weeks ago, fans in Washington had anointed backup Kirk Cousins the new savior of the team after two strong statistical efforts in relief of starter Robert Griffin III, who was forced out of Week 2 with a dislocated ankle.

Then came the ill-fated Thursday Night game against the New York Giants where Cousins threw four second half interceptions, cooling his hype and leaving fans clamoring for Griffin’s return in just a few short hours.

That’s no surprise in the fickle world of the win-and-everything’s-okay NFL. With Cousins yet to win a game as the team’s starter, the Redskins received some good news in regards to RGIII’s return today (Mon., October 13, 2014). Washington head coach Jay Gruden told CSN that the embattled star will begin participating in individual drills this week:

“I think he’s going to start individual drills this week. As far as actually taking practice reps I think that will be at least another week. We’ll get him out there, do some individual drills, throw some balls to the wideouts. That will be the first step. Then next week we’ll try to get him maybe in some practice situations and see where he is.”

Griffin recently returned to practice to do some stretching with the team, but he did not participate in positional drills. That’s the logical next step in his recovery, and Gruden wants the signal caller to get in one or two weeks of full practice before starting a game.

Griffin was apparently spotted running close to full-speed sprints before Washington’s 30-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals yesterday.

As their one-win season borders dangerously close to being lost, the team needs RGIII now more than ever. But injuries have sapped his effectiveness in recent years. Will he return to the glory days of his 2012 rookie season?
