Nike Suspends Endorsement Deal With Adrian Peterson

With the Minnesota Vikings suspending star running back Adrian Peterson by placing him on the Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission list earlier today (Wed., September 17, 2014) while he is involved in the legal process for charges of child abuse, the team tried to erase the mistake they made by reactivating him only one day after the Vikings’ 30-7 Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots.

But that doesn’t mean the windfall of Peterson’s sage is going to come to a stop. The NFL already lost their sponsorship deal with Radisson Hotels, and today, it appears that the scandal is hitting Peterson’s endorsements as well.

Peterson’s sponsorship with athletic apparel giant Nike has been suspended according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell:

Rovell later reported that Mylan, makers of medical emergency device Epipen, had terminated their sponsorship of Peterson:

These should be the first two of potentially several endorsements that fall by the wayside for Peterson, who has fallen under intense scrutiny for his allegedly violent acts of child abuse, which he readily admits to committing and views as nothing more than strict discipline standards brought forth from his upbringing.

Yet that simply won’t fly in today’s odd and scandal-filled NFL landscape, and Peterson is most likely headed for a substantial league punishment once the final verdict is declared.

He’ll probably get another chance to play in the NFL again, but it might not be with the Vikings. His reputation, which was once that of a wholesome and generous citizen, has taken an irreparable hit that Peterson will never fully recover from.

He’s lost some endorsements, but this may just be the tip of the iceberg of this sad, ever-developing situation.
