Jaguars Receiver Cecil Shorts III Out Of Week 1 Game In Philadelphia

Projected as one of the worst teams in the NFL, the Jacksonville Jaguars will fight an uphill battle heading into the 2014 season. And they aren’t getting any help from the injury report, as No. 1 wide receiver Cecil Shorts III apparently won’t make the trip to Philadelphia for the team’s Week 1 game against the Eagles.

Shorts has been dealing with hamstring issues all week. The fact that he was missing practice recently was obviously not a good sign, but the team was holding out hope he could still play. Mark Long of the Associated Press confirmed that Shorts would indeed be held out of the Jags’ opening game:

It’s a brutal bow for the Jacksonville, who should find themselves down by a wide margin in hostile territory against Philadelphia head coach Chip Kelly’s high-volume attack. Obviously they could use Shorts tremendously as they’ll most likely be forced to pass the ball quite often, but they won’t have that luxury.

With promising rookie Blake Bortles waiting in the wings, veteran quarterback Chad Henne will start for the team in Week 1, but it’s only a matter of time before Jaguars fans start calling for Bortles.

When he does get his chance to start, he’ll need a savvy receiver like Shorts to help him mature as a passer. No timetable has been set for Shorts’ return as of yet.
