Tonight (Sat., August 23, 2014) the Minnesota Vikings traveled into Kansas City to take on the Chiefs in what most consider the most important week of the NFL exhibition season, Week 3.

With veteran quarterback Matt Cassell starting for the Vikings, anticipation was high to see how first round draft pick Teddy Bridgewater would perform. The rookie passer already impressed in bringing the team back to beat the Arizona Cardinals late, prompting many to speculate how long it would be until Bridgewater took over as the starter.

Cassell continued to perform well, forcing Bridgewater to the sidelines until the third quarter. When Bridgewater got his chance to perform, however, he delivered with ferocious results.

The rookie came into the game and scored on two of his first three throws, first hitting tight end Allen Reisner for a 5-yard score (courtesy of FanSided GIFs):

Bridgewater followed with an 8-yard score to Reisner that put the Vikings up by a wide margin of 27-5 (Fansided):

Bridgewater continued his accuracy in the middle of the fourth quarter, carving up the Chiefs’ secondary to put the Vikings in the red zone yet again. The Vikings could only muster a field goal, but the game was already secure with their 25-point lead.

Bridgewater made his presence felt with yet another solid performance in a one-sided 30-12 win.

With much more NFL game experience under his belt, Cassell will remain the starter for the time being, and he probably should. But if Bridgewater continues to improve his grasp of new offensive coordinator Norv Turner’s offense, there’s no doubt going to be a quarterback controversy in Minnesota sooner than later.

After all, the Vikings didn’t spend a first round draft pick on Bridgewater to let him set, and he’s unquestionably the future of the franchise. How much longer will it be until we see him starting under center for the Vikings?
