Buccaneers Acquire Pro Bowl Lineman Logan Mankins From New England

In some blockbuster news from Florida, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have acquired six-time Pro Bowl left guard Logan Mankins from the New England Patriots for tight end Tim Wright and an undisclosed draft pick.

FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer was first to break the trade news on Twitter:

The Buccaneers were rumored to be close to signing former Dolphin Richie Incognito, who was at the center of the Miami bullying scandal last year. While the Bucs said they haven’t closed the door on Incognito signing with the team, new head coach Lovie Smith had high praise for Mankins, noting that the longtime veteran instantly makes his team better (via FOX Sports):

“He has a history of a certain type of play in the league. We got better, kind of simple as that,” the coach added. “I like the direction our football team is heading.”

Across the country in Foxboro, Patriots star cornerback Darrelle Revis deemed the loss of Mankins a big one:

“It’s very sad. He’s been here for a long time. I’ve only been here for a couple of months, but Mank is known around the league as being one of the best offensive linemen in the game,” the cornerback added. “He’s proven that, and he’s done it for a long time.”

However, Revis moved on to discuss the acquisition of Wright, a tight end who became the odd man out when the Buccaneers added free agent Brandon Myers and drafted Austin Seferian-Jenkins:

“He’s great, man. He started for us down in Tampa Bay. … We’re getting a solid player who can catch, who can run and run great routes,” Revis said. “He was a wide receiver coming in and they switched him to tight end. He has a lot of speed at the tight end position.”

So the Patriots have traded one of their offensive cornerstones, most likely in an effort to clear up some cap space after 2014. Was it the right decision, or will quarterback Tom Bray miss Mankins’ experience and knowledge this year?
