Ben Tate Practices For First Time Since Week 1

Ben Tate

Thought to be the team’s three-down starter in 2014, Cleveland Browns running back Ben Tate has been out of action since suffering a sprained right knee in the Browns’ Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The injury was supposed to keep him out for around 4 weeks, and it appears that the timetable was at least close to accurate. Reporting on Cleveland’s practice today (Tues. September 30, 2014), Nate Ulrich clarified that Tate practiced today for the first time since suffering the injury:

The finding will come as good news for Cleveland, who took a 1-2 record into their Week 4 bye. The Browns’ record looks a lot worse than it is, as they suffered a three-point loss to Pittsburgh and then lost to Baltimore 23-21 in Week 3.

Backup running backs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell have played exceptionally well for the team in Tate’s absence, leading to the belief that they will spell the oft-injured starter quite often.

That’s probably the best course of action for the team, as Tate has routinely proven that he can barely be counted on to handed a backup roe, let alone the punishment of being a full-blow starter. Yet he’s flashed enough talent in the past three years to justify the team’s excitement about him, and there’s no doubt he can rack up the yards when he actually makes it onto the field.

If Tate does indeed suit up for Week 5, he’ll be faced with the awful Tennessee Titans run defense, which has been allowing a ton of yards to physical backs in 2014. Quarterback Brian Hoyer still has the reigns for the franchise, and getting Tate back could possibly help him win some of those close games.
