The defending NFC West (and Super Bowl) champion Seattle Seahawks already continued their reign of dominance by defeating Green Bay 36-16 in the 2014 Week 1 season opener this Thursday night (September 4, 2014).

With the NFC West arguably the toughest division in all of football on paper, the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, who were set to be Seattle’s closest competition, have experienced some unfortunate injuries that will help keep the Seahawks on top for the time being.

But it should still be a very competitive division in 2014. Lets take a look at the 2014 NFC West schedule.

Seattle Seahawks:

The Seahawks are not only the favorites to in the division, but repeat as Super Bowl champions. They won’t have an easy road, as they have the league’s 6th hardest schedule according to ESPN, but their stadium is the toughest place to play in the NFL Away games at San Diego, Carolina, Kansas City, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Arizona will all be tough, but Seattle has the league’s best defense and all the pieces in place for another championship run.

Arizona Cardinals:

Arizona had an excellent season in head coach Bruce Arians’ first year. They’re looking to build on that in 2014, but a slew of debilitating injuries certainly isn’t helping their cause right now. Neither will the 8th hardest schedule in the NFL. Away games at Denver, Seattle, Atlanta, and San Francisco will be rough games for Arizona, especially with running back Are Ellington and defensive end Darnell Dockett on the sidelines.

San Francisco 49ers:

Like their division rivals Arizona, San Francisco has experienced several unfortunate injuries that will limit their potential in 2014. They’ve lost star pass rush specialist Aldon Smith for nine games to suspension, and defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, linebacker NaVorro Bowman, and safety Antoine Bethea are all injured. The Niners’ success rests on their running game and defense, and while the former is still intact, the defense is severely lacking. It could be a long year in San Francisco, and the league’s 4th hardest schedule certainly won’t help.

St. Louis Rams:

The Rams were dealt a crushing blow when quarterback Sam Bradford was forced out of his second straight season with a torn ACL. They have the hardest schedule in the NFC West and the 3rd hardest in the NFL, and away games at Philadelphia, Kansas City, Arizona, San Diego, and Seattle will test their mettle. With backup quarterback Shaun Hill stepping up to take on the challenge, the St. Louis defense will have to keep them in all of their games.
