Considering the salaries of Premier Referees it is amazing that there are so many examples of incorrect
decisions being made. Premier Division football is an high stakes business with large financial involvement, yet it appears that despite being highly paid these referees do not come up to scratch in their handling of their games. Their performance can have a huge effect on the fortunes of clubs, yet there does not appear to be any redress by the powers that be. Example – Howard Webb’s handling of the Chelsea v Liverpool fixture was of a poor standard, making at least four obvious mistakes when in plain sight of the incidents. When discussing this game with a number of fans, including a football referee from the Amateur game, most were of the opinion that Howard Webb considers himself a star, and above criticism. They also cannot understand why despite poor performances referees and linesmen do not seem to be downgraded to lower divisions, and also a deduction in salaries.
