India’s stand-in skipper Virat Kohli smashed an unbeaten century to guide the hosts to a series whitewash over Sri Lanka in the 5-match one-day international series.

With an endeavor to complete a clean sweep of the touring team, the Indians exhibited sheer commitment as they pulled off a 3-wicket win in the fifth and final encounter in Ranchi on Sunday.

Earlier, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and decided to bat first. The visitors’ innings was primarily driver by Mathews (139) himself, who struck his maiden century to steer Sri Lanka to 286-8 in 50 overs.

For India, Dhawal Kulkarni (3/57) was the pick of the bowlers. Spinners Akshar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in with two wickets apiece, while Stuart Binny also picked up a wicket.

In response, India lost both their openers – Ajinkya Rahane (2) and Rohit Sharma (9) cheaply – before Ambati Rayudu (59) and Virat Kohli joined forces for a healthy 136-run stand.

Subsequently, India kept on losing wickets after regular intervals, as Virat Kohli (139*) looked unyielding on one side. The skipper, ultimately, led from the front to finish the things off for the hosts with 8 balls to spare.
